The temperatures continue to fluctuate causing a very late start to ice fishing this year. On Saturday, it was the first day that ice huts were put out and rented on Cooks Bay on Lake Simcoe. About 2,000 fishermen went out fishing for perch on 5 inches of ice. Some friends went fishing and they caught their limit. They noted that the larger perch were caught earlier in the day. The best fishing was between 10 am and 1130 am, which exactly co-incited with the prime fishing times for that day. Warmer weather plus rain will damage the thin ice on the lakes on Monday. Be very careful, especially around ice cracks.River Flow Rates: medium/high. Visibility tea coloured, visibility 5ft.
River Levels: Saugeen River (above Durham) steady at 1.531M, Saugeen River (Walkerton) at 10.027M, Saugeen at Port Elgin up at 8.305M, Sauble River (Sauble Falls) rising at 1.218M, Sydenham River (Owen Sound) dropping at 5.128M, Maitland River (above Wingham) dropping at 10.232M, French River at Woseley Bay at 187.183M, Bronte Creek near Zimmerman up 6.049M, Credit River at Streetsville rising at 4.567M, Credit River at Orangeville rising at 11.292M, Grand River (Doon), rising at 4.154M (below Shand dam) down at 1.646M, Rideau River at Ottawa not available, Ottawa River at Britannia at 58.514M
Prime Fishing Times: Saturday January 28th, 2012: 3:04 pm to 5:50 pm (moon overhead) and 2:54 am to 5:24 am (moon underneath). Moon rise 9:02 am, moon set 11:08 pm
Flyfishing: crayfish, bloodworms, worms and minnows for larger trout. Use roe for rainbow and steelhead, single eggs seem to get the best results. Minnows for perch.
Great Lakes Fishing: We are waiting for the lakes to freeze to safely venture out. Best lures are purple/black Lyman’s with silver specks and Lucky Strike spoons. Also, Rudy Hachey won the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular using his trusted white ladder-back Lyman lure with a 21.16-lb (9.53 kilogram) Chinook salmon. Nice fish!

BIGGEST FISH CAUGHT IN CAMPGROUNDPatience and persistence does pay off. We were fishing the Saugeen River and Kait caught this beautiful giant river brown trout. As you can see, the colours of the fish were beautiful. Kait fought the fish for half an hour before we could land this 9.4lb monster. This was her first trout. Congratulations Kait, great fish, the biggest we have ever seen pulled out of this part of the river. Click on picture to see full size.
We brought the fish back and Kait started cleaning it. She cut off the head and tail and put it on the ground. Rhys picked up the tail and asked it "You alright? Are you alright?...."
